Informational Interviews

What is an information interview?
An information interview is a structured conversation with an individual who is already working in an area that is of interest to you.

How do I identify people to interview?
It is easier than you think. Parents, friends, a counselor, or your instructors are all good sources for identifying candidates for an information interview. You should try to have at least 5 interviews for each occupation in which you are interested. The more the better.

How do I schedule an interview?
Simply contact the individual and explain that you are doing some career research. Unless they are really too busy, most people are flattered by being asked and are more than happy to talk to you. Ideally, you will want to conduct the interview at the work site.

What should I ask at the interview?
Be sure to prepare a list of questions BEFORE you go to the interview. Here are some possibilities:

  • How did you get into this line of work? Can you describe your career path?
  • What do you like best about your job? What do you like least about your job?
  • What education/training do you have that prepared you to do your job?
  • What are the most important skills one needs to do this work effectively?
  • What are your major responsibilities?
  • What are some major business problems you face, and how do you handle them?
  • What external trends impact your business/industry?
  • What does it take to become successful in this field/profession?
  • What is the salary range for your occupation?
  • What are some of the entry-level and other positions?
  • How difficult will it be to get a job in this field/profession after graduation from college?
  • What should I be doing now to prepare myself for a career in this field/profession?
  • What is the overall job outlook in this field profession? Is it a growing developing profession/business?
  • What advice would you give someone seeking to learn more about career opportunities in this field/profession?
  • Who do you suggest I should interview to learn more about this field profession?

What do I do after I have had the information interview?
Be sure to send a thank you note immediately.
