Locating Available
Positions
Searching for the right job requires a significant investment
of your time and energy. The Office of Career Planning maintains
an on-line
database of job and internship opportunities (http://www.stedwards.edu/Career
Planning/onlinedatabase.htm ) that have been submitted to us.
In addition, there are a number of web sites such as Monster
(www.monster.com) and Hot Jobs
(www.hotjobs.com) that contain thousands of job openings. You
can post your resume to these web sites and may hear from interested
employers.
Most companies and organizations will post their openings on their
web site. Visit the site and look for a link for “jobs”
or “careers”. In addition, there are sites like the
Texas Workforce Commission
(http://www.twc.state.tx.us/ ) that have several job sites, as
well as links to all of the state agencies. If you are interested
in jobs at the federal level, check out USA
Jobs (www.usajobs.opm.gov).
Without a doubt, networking is
the single most effective way to identify available positions.
Don’t neglect this strategy. Make an appointment with a
career counselor if you would like more information.
Career Fairs can play a role in your job search. Though you are
not as likely to obtain a job directly through a career fair,
they are excellent opportunities to learn more about a company
or organization. Dress professionally, bring copies of your resume,
and be prepared to ask questions about the organizations you visit.
