DeLayne Hudspeth Award for Innovative Instruction

Delayne Hudspeth, retired professor of Curriculum and Instruction and Instructional Technology at the University of Texas, was a mentor to several St. Edward’s faculty members and scores of other master’s and doctoral students. Through the generosity of an anonymous donor, Dr. Hudspeth’s contributions to innovation in higher education will be honored by this award.

One award in the amount of $500 may be given each year at the discretion of the Faculty Development Committee.1

Goal of Award Program
This award program aims to provide recognition and support for St. Edward’s teachers who want to explore a variety of ways to grow and learn, and to create innovative and possibly unique learning environments. Faculty and instructional staff of all disciplines and levels of knowledge and expertise2 are encouraged to apply.

Eligible Course Projects
Since this award celebrates innovation, preference will be given to projects that demonstrate the greatest levels of innovation and that clearly present the value of that innovation for student learning. Risk takers are encouraged to nominate their instructional innovations for the Hudspeth Award. This award might be especially useful to those who otherwise find it difficult to acquire funds and develop a positive image for innovative instruction.

Generally, instructors may apply for the award based on an innovation planned and implemented in the year (January - December) previous to the application deadline.  For 2009-10, however, projects implemented in any of the following semesters will be eligible:

  • Fall 2008
  • Spring 2009
  • Summer 2009
  • Fall 2009

Recipients of the Hudspeth Award must wait five years before reapplying.

Note: New courses are not eligible for consideration. Rather, the Hudspeth award focuses on innovations within an existing course.  Self-nominations should highlight a specific project, assignment, exercise, teaching method, or a new use of technology that illustrates innovation.

Deadline
Applications for the 2010 Hudspeth Award must be received by the Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) by January 15, 2010.  All applications will be submitted online, using the link on the CTE website and the template provided.

Application Procedures
The instructor will self-nominate via the web link below, using the application form provided below, describing the project in clear language, avoiding jargon that will not be well-understood outside his or her field.

Selection Process
Since this award celebrates innovation, preference will be given to projects that exhibit the greatest levels of innovation. However, all five application categories will be reviewed when selecting the winner.

For a detailed description of selection criteria, please download the complete Hudspeth Award Guidelines.

The winner(s) of the award will be decided upon by a majority vote of the memers of the Hudspeth Award Review Committee. Public presentation of the award and a framed certificate will be made during Honor's Night in April.

The winner(s) of the award will be asked to serve on the Hudspeth Awards Committee in the year following his/her receipt of the award.
