University Honors Program
HONORS COURSES THAT FULFILL PORTIONS OF THE SEU GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENT

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. Does the honors section of Rhetoric and Composition I or II count as one of the required seven honors seminars?

No, honors sections of Rhetoric and Composition I or II do NOT count as one of the required seminars.

2. What if I decide not to continue in the Honors Program?

Students who decide not to continue in the Honors Program simply shift to taking regular General Education courses. Honors courses they have already taken will substitute for the specified General Education requirements.

3. What happens if my GPA in honors classes goes below 3.50 or my cumulative GPA goes below 3.20?

Students are responsible for checking to see that they do meet the requirements of the Honors Program each semester. If your GPA falls below the minimum, you must schedule a meeting with the Director of the Honors Program to discuss your plans for improvement. Depending on how far students have gone in the Honors Program, they may be allowed up to two semesters to reach the required GPA. A student who does not meet the requirements at the end of this time will shift to the regular General Education curriculum and will be dismissed from the Honors Program. Students will not be allowed to register for the Honors Senior Thesis unless they meet requirements for the cumulative and honors GPA. Instead, students who do not meet these requirements will take Capstone.

4. If my GPA falls too low, what happens to the honors courses I have already taken?

Any honors courses you have taken will continue to substitute for the specified General Education requirements.

5. I made a "C" in an honors course. What effect will this have on my honors GPA?

Students will maintain the required minimum GPA of 3.50 in honors courses if they make an "A" in half of their courses and a "B" in the other half. A student who makes a "C" in a course needs to make 5 "A's" and 2 "B's" to have a 3.50 GPA.

6. May I substitute courses taken through Study Abroad programs for honors courses?

The Honors Program allows students to be exempt from taking one honors seminar if they have at least three hours transfer credit for a study abroad course other than a language course. (Courses that combine language study with a substantial cultural study component may be considered.) The Honors Program does not make substitutions for particular honors courses. Students who are considering Study Abroad should talk with their academic advisor to see whether particular courses might substitute for requirements in General Education or in their major.

7. May I take honors courses pass/fail?

No.
