Mission Statement

The School of Education adheres to high standards of academic excellence as it prepares caring, moral, educators who are well prepared to teach in culturally diverse schools. The School promotes excellence and accountability in teaching and learning within a framework of democracy and social justice. Faculty in the School of Education strive to model lifelong learning, the courage to take risks, and foster critical and creative thinking in professional interactions with each other, students and the larger educational community.

The School offers undergraduate and post-baccalaureate teacher certification at four levels (EC-12, EC-4, 4-8, and 8-12) with certifications in art, bilingual generalist, chemistry, English language arts and reading, generalist, history, life science, mathematics, physical education, religious education, social studies, Spanish, and theater arts with supplemental certifications in bilingual education and English as a second language. Non-certification majors in athletic training, kinesiology, and pre-physical therapy are also offered. In fall 2006, a Master of Arts in Teaching program was added. Programs within the School of Education are endorsed by the State Board for each certification and accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

The School of Education coordinates a number of educational outreach programs in the greater Austin educational community, including the Graduation Enhancement Program, a summer residential program for rural, migrant high school students; Project Access, a bilingual teacher preparation pipeline; and the Teaching Scholars Program, a high school mentoring program for mathematics and science majors. In addition, continuing education opportunities for in-service teachers in the areas of technology integration, mentoring, and the assessment of teaching and learning are offered.
