The Teacher’s Pipeline was established in August 2002 by a group of Austin area partners dedicated to reforming education for the purpose of ensuring student achievement. The primary focus of the Collaborative is to provide needed support to teaching assistants in Austin Independent School District who are interested in earning a bachelor's degree and teacher certification in a high-needs content area such as bilingual education and special education.
There are four main goals of The Teacher Pipeline.
- To certify teaching assistants who are interested in teaching in shortage areas.
- To reduce the barriers to access that prevent teaching assistants from seeking and/or earning their bachelor’s degree and teacher certification.
- To ensure that the program is replicable and can be implemented around the country by others interested in starting a certification program for teaching assistants.
- To secure funding for participant scholarships.
Supporters of the program have included the Ford Foundation, Houston Endowment, and the KDK Harman Foundation.
