Our Partners and Their Roles:
Austin Independent School District: The Austin Independent School District provides The Teacher’s Pipeline with access to its teaching assistants who are interested in earning their bachelor’s degree and a teaching certificate in a high needs content area. District representatives assist The Teacher Pipeline to ensure participant success. Support services provided by the district include: release time for teaching assistants to attend classes; classroom space for courses to be offered at district locations; and substitute teacher pay for when participants are attending classes.
Austin Community College: AISD teaching assistants in the Teacher’s Pipeline first enroll at Austin Community College to earn college credit hours in general education. After completing the required coursework, students transfer into St. Edward’s University or Huston-Tillotson University to finish their undergraduate degree and teacher certification. While at Austin Community College, Pipeline students have access to numerous student support services and space for events, such as family nights that recognize participants, their spouses, and their children.
St. Edward’s University: AISD bilingual teaching assistants complete the remainder of their college course work through the St. Edward’s University New College Program for working adults. As Pipeline students complete their coursework in New College, they concurrently enroll in the teacher education program in the School of Education. They then complete the necessary education courses and field experiences for certification in bilingual education. St. Edward’s University offers financial support and a wide array of student support services to ensure student success.
Huston-Tillotson University: At Huston-Tillotson University, AISD teaching assistants interested in earning certification in Special Education are provided with an avenue for doing so. Additionally, Huston-Tillotson supports Pipeline students with scholarship monies, student support services, and contributes valuable staff and faculty time to ensure the individual success of each participant in The Teacher’s Pipeline.
Capital IDEA: Capital IDEA prepares underemployed adults for success in higher education. The organization supports The Teacher’s Pipeline through project administration. Additionally, Capital IDEA provides individual and group case management and counseling to Pipeline students. A Capital IDEA representative assists Pipeline students to prepare for the required Texas Higher Education Assessment.
Austin Interfaith provides community organizing services and has a representative who actively serves on the board. Additionally, Austin Interfaith organized the initial retreat that The Teacher Pipeline was derived from. With excellent district and political ties, Austin Interfaith leads the consortium in pursuing the establishment of policies to support the participants in the program.
Education Austin: Education Austin supports the project by communicating with its AISD teaching assistant members about the program. An Education Austin officer serves on The Teacher’s Pipeline Board and participates in and sponsors Pipeline events while providing other assistance and resources to support the success of the program. |
