The Go Project

The Go Project is a partnership between St. Edward’s University and the Austin Independent School District. It began in August 2002 to provide students who are in special education with the opportunity to be included in learning and socialization with their age appropriate peers. Students who are in special education are eligible to stay in public school until they are 22 years old. These young adults between 19-22 years no longer have peers their age on the high school campus. The Go Project is staffed by an AISD special education teacher and assistant. Students are from various high schools in South Austin. St. Edwards’ provides a classroom and facilities for this special group.

The focus of the Go Project is to help students develop self determination and good work skills so that they will be successful after graduation at age 22. Throughout the first year students participated in several college classes and they did volunteer work internships in the cafeteria and at St. Joseph’s Hall. In the cafeteria they cleaned tables, restocked napkins, condiments, and silverware. At St. Joseph’s Hall students worked on general cleaning tasks that they will need for more independent living in their futures. The first year for the Go Project has been wonderful! The staff and students at St. Edward’s have made us feel very welcome and accepted, and we are so grateful. We look forward to a long and happy partnership that will not only enrich the lives of students who have disabilities but will also enrich the lives of those who become friends with these special students.
