SPILL RESPONSE

It is important for you to know how to handle an accidental release of chemical materials. A rapid and correct response will help ensure people's safety.

Whenever you encounter the accidental release of a flammable material, you must keep any flames, sparks or sources of heat away from the area.

EVALUATE THE SITUATION

  • Try to identify the spilled chemical
  • Try to identify where it is coming from
  • If it is a hazardous or highly toxic chemical, get as far away as possible

REPORT WHAT YOU SAW AND KNOW

Give details of the spill incident to your supervisor and University Police.

SPILL OF KNOWN, NONTOXIC SUBSTANCES

  • Stop the flow of the material by shutting off the valve or turning the container upright
  • Close or cover any drains that are in the line of flow of the material
  • Use absorbent materials, such as towels, to contain the spill area
  • Barricade the spill area to alert other employees of the danger
  • Cover the spill area with absorbent material
  • Allow time for absorbent material to soak up the maximum amount of spill it can
  • Pick up absorbent material and scrub the area
  • Place waste in a proper disposal container

SPILL OF HAZARDOUS OR HIGHLY TOXIC SUBSTANCES

  • Call 911 for the Austin Fire Department if the spill is presenting an imminent danger
  • Advise the 911 operator that University Police will meet the emergency responders at the Congress entrance to the campus
  • Summon help from University Police (448-8444)
  • Call Building Maintenance (448-8787) to have the A/C or circulating heater turned off
  • Isolate the spill area from other areas and alert all other workers/students of the danger
  • Determine if any employees/students are in the spill area and if they are injured
  • Evacuate employees/students to downwind areas if necessary
