Homecoming 2008: A Weekend to Reconnect and Reminisce
The hilltop was buzzing in February for Homecoming and Parents Weekend 2008. Alumni, students, parents, faculty and staff numbering near 1,000 — a record-setting attendance — gathered for a weekend celebration full of festivities.
Busy Weekend for Parents

On Friday an evening reception was held in the glass-walled conference room overlooking the downtown Austin skyline on the new third floor of Fleck Hall. The event included a presentation about programs offered by the Kozmetsky Center of Excellence in Global Finance.
The next day current students led parents on campus tours that included the recently renovated Fleck Hall and the John Brooks Williams Natural Sciences Center.
Also on Saturday St. Edward's University President George E. Martin shared with parents highlights of the 2007–2008 year during the President’s Welcome.
Networking Receptions Well Attended
The Mabee Ballroom was the location for Saturday’s School Networking Receptions. Parents, students and alumni mixed and mingled with faculty, giving parents the opportunity to become more acquainted with their student’s major area of study. Many parents also relived the classroom experience through hour-long presentations by current faculty members and students.
Hilltop Homegrown
A brand new event for this year — Hilltop Homegrown — featured a picnic and an outdoor marketplace that included alumni-owned businesses. Harriet and Adolofo Montero, '84, Harriet's Original Dressing; Talena Rasmussen, '00, and Lizelle Villapando, '00, New Bohemia; and Mando Garcia, '90, Mando Garcia Photography, were on hand to promote their products and services.
Hilltoppers Score Multiple Wins
Athletics drew large crowds on both Friday and Saturday. The St. Edward's women’s softball team split a doubleheader against Saginaw Valley State on Friday afternoon at Diane Daniels Field. The Hilltoppers took the first game, 4-3, but fell in the second game, 3-2. On Saturday night, the men’s basketball team enjoyed a Homecoming victory over Texas A&M–International. Final score was 67-60. The women’s basketball team was also in the win column with a 74-49 victory over the Texas A&M–International women’s team.
