Homecoming and Parents Weekend 2010

Journey Back and Celebrate
125 Years

February 19–21 was a Homecoming and Parents Weekend like no other. More than 1,400 attendees gathered on the hilltop to reconnect and share memories — and join in the launch of a year-long celebration of 125 Years of St. Edward’s. Throughout the festivities, parents visited their students and met up with Holy Cross Brothers, professors, alumni and other Hilltopper families.

Betting on a Good Time

Friday evening began with an event favorite, Casino Night, where students, parents, faculty and staff showed their talents at spinning the wheels and playing the cards. Adriana Canavita, mother of Patricio “Pato” Canavita ’13, says her trip from Laredo was well worth it. “I was mesmerized by how much fun students and parents were having together.”

We enjoyed doing as much as possible at Homecoming ... even renewing our wedding vows after 25 years. &mdashCaroline and Bob Warmath.

After Saturday’s Welcome Breakfast, Hilltoppers were treated to music by the university’s Omni Singers, followed by a warm welcome from St. Edward’s University President George E. Martin. Martin shared highlights from the 2010 Strategic Plan and officially kicked off the university’s 125th anniversary.

Activities Held Across Campus

Lamar McKnight ’11, and his mother Jane Davenport from Arizona, enjoyed a St. Edward’s in Angers, France panel presentation, which helped prepare McKnight for his upcoming summer study abroad program.

Guided and self-guided historical walking tours gave participants a first-hand look at the rich 125-year journey of St. Edward’s through its campus architecture and landscape.

And, what is Homecoming without a tailgate party? Attendees gathered Saturday afternoon for Texas BBQ, a 125 birthday cake, live music, games and children’s activities — and cheered on the Hilltopper men’s and women’s basketball teams. That evening, anniversary fireworks on the hilltop lit up the Austin skyline.

Hilltoppers Face Tight Doubleheader

UT–Permian Basin women’s basketball team met its match Saturday when they faced the Hilltopper women’s team in front of a cheering Homecoming crowd. The visitors barely squeaked by the Hilltoppers, winning 68-61. Following the loss, the Hilltopper men’s team regained victory for St. Edward’s with a 47-45 win over UT–Permian Basin.
