Homecoming and Family Weekend 2012

Homecoming and Family Weekend is a fun and festive time on the hilltop. This year’s event, held Feb. 10–12, brought alumni, students, parents, faculty and staff together to cherish the tradition of blue and gold in grand style. More than 1,300 Hilltoppers and guests joined in the celebration.

Activities for Everyone

Friday afternoon, students kicked off Homecoming with a rousing Blue and Gold Spirit Day pep rally. Later that evening, parents joined students and alumni at rolling the dice and spinning the wheels during Casino Night.

“It’s one of our favorite events at Homecoming,” say Yvonne and Randy Willis, parents of Andrea Blanco ’13. “We liked hanging out with Andrea and trying our luck at the games. We’ve been to three Homecomings, and we'll definitely be back next year!”

Following Saturday’s breakfast, Hilltoppers received a warm welcome from St. Edward’s University President George E. Martin. President Martin shared the university’s plans for campus renovations and new facilities over the next three years — including the completion of the natural sciences center, and a renovated library and new learning commons. Parents also learned about the university’s growing global presence with 11 partner universities in nine countries.

Events Held Across Campus

The weekend offered plenty to enjoy — from visiting the schools’ open houses and touring residence halls to viewing a special art exhibit of great Americans sponsored by the Kozmetsky Center to seeing Hilltopper athletics in action.

And what is Homecoming without a tailgate party? Attendees gathered Saturday afternoon for Texas BBQ, music, games and children’s activities — and cheered on an exciting basketball doubleheader. The St. Edward’s men’s and women’s basketball teams took on University of Arkansas–Fort Smith.

WNBA star Taj McWillians-Franklin'93 (center) is honored at Homecoming. During the games’ halftimes, St. Edward’s retired jersey #34 in honor of the professional achievements of former women’s basketball team member and alumna, Taj McWilliams-Franklin ’93, a WNBA All-Star player. Also, John Knorr, former athletic director and baseball coach, was inducted into the St. Edward’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

“Our whole family came to Homecoming determined to do everything, and we had a great time,” says Sue Kinane, mother of Kelsey Kinane ’14. “We spent the entire weekend on campus — going to the basketball and baseball games, the Sunday Mass and brunch, and just spending time with Kelsey. We love St. Edward’s — it’s a parent's dream campus.”
