St. Edward’s Congratulates Our
2012 Graduates
United Nations Award Recipient to Speak at Commencement
On Saturday, May 12, Ambassador Sonia Picado Sotela will address the 2012 senior
class and their families and friends. Picado Sotela is chair of the United Nations
Advisory Board on Human Security, president of the Inter-American Institute of
Human Rights and has served as judge and vice chair of the Inter-American Court of
Human Rights. She is a former member of the Legislative Assembly of Costa Rica and
the former president of the National Liberation Party.
Picado Sotela holds a Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Costa Rica.
She was the first woman elected dean of a law school in Latin America, has taught
at universities worldwide and served as the Costa Rican Ambassador to the United States. Her
many honors include the United Nations Human Rights Award in recognition of her work
in Latin America.
New Plans for University Commencement
Due to the growth of our graduating classes, St. Edward’s is combining all
of its commencements into one ceremony held in May at the Frank Erwin
Center. This year, May and August graduates will walk in May 2012, and
December graduates will walk in May 2013. In subsequent years,
commencements will follow this same procedure.
On the eve of graduation, St. Edward’s invites you to participate in the Hilltop Send-Off, a special celebration for our 2012 graduates. The event includes Baccalaureate Mass, a Legacy Walk through campus and the Red Doors Revelry — a festive outdoor reception.

Remind your senior about the importance of giving back through the Senior Gift Campaign. The campaign
supports The St. Edward’s Fund, which provides vital scholarships and operating capital for each
academic year. Join your senior in giving back. You, too, can make a gift in honor of the Class of 2012!
