St. Edward’s Congratulates Our 2013 Graduates
Former U.S. Under Secretary to Speak at Commencement
The Honorable Maria Otero, an ardent champion of human rights and social justice, will address the 2013 senior class and their families and friends. In January 2012, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton named Maria Otero Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy and Human Rights, an office in which she served until February 2013. Otero oversaw numerous U.S. foreign policy issues, including rule of law, refugees, human trafficking and global criminal justice. She was the highest ranking Hispanic in the State Department and the first Latina Under Secretary of State in history.
Otero holds MA degrees from the University of Maryland and the School of Advanced International Studies at The Johns Hopkins University. Her many awards include selection by Newsweek in 2005 as one of the United States’ 20 Most Influential Women and Notre Dame University’s Distinguished Service in Latin America Award.
Bill Munday to be Honored
Businessman and humanitarian Bill Munday will be awarded a special citation at commencement. Munday’s business accomplishments span multiple industries while his generosity provides resources for organizations nationwide that serve veterans, abused children and college students in financial need. His support of St. Edward’s has created an endowment for scholarships, helped complete a new academic building and provided funding to build a state-of-the-art library, which opens in Fall 2013.
