Keynote
Speaker - Luci Baines Johnson, '97

Luci Baines Johnson graduated from New College with a
BLS in Communication in 1997. She also received the Outstanding
New College Graduate, New College Portfolio and Presidential
awards. Currently, she is chairman of the board of LBJ
Asset Management Partners and vice president of BusinesSuites.
For many years, Johnson was a member of the Board of Directors
of LBJS Broadcasting.
Community service role
Johnson serves the community in a number of professional
and public capacities, including membership of the boards
of the Lyndon Baines Johnson Foundation, the Children's
Medical Center Foundation of Central Texas, the Central
Texas Public Telecommunications Council, the Lady Bird
Johnson Wildflower Center and the SafePlace of Austin Foundation.
She is a life trustee of the Seton Fund and a trustee emerita
of Boston University.
Previous community service includes chairman of the Tenth
Anniversary Celebration for the Bishop of the Austin Diocese;
national president of the Volunteers for Vision; chairman
of the advisory board of the University of Texas School
of Nursing; member of the Board of Visitors of the Boston
University School of Medicine and Board of Review of the
National League of Nursing; chairman of the Texas Affiliate
Fundraising Drive for the American Heart Association and
past director of Covenant House in Toronto, Ontario.
Honors
Johnson's honors include recognition as one of the Top
25 Women-Owned Businesses by the Austin Business Journal and
K-EYE TV in 1997. In 1996, she received the Distinguished
Service Award from Georgetown University School of Nursing.
Other awards include Honorary Alumna of Vanderbilt University
(1993); The Apollo Award, the highest lay award given by
the American Optometric Association; Honorary Member of
Sigma Theta Tau (1985); and “Special Friend” Award from
UT-Austin School of Nursing (1983). Johnson also established
the Luci Baines Johnson Centennial Professorship in Nursing
at UT-Austin.
Family is Johnson's most precious career. She is married
to Ian Turpin, the joy and rock of her life. She has four
grown children, Lyndon, Nicole, Rebekah and Claudia, one
stepson, Stuart, and nine treasured grandchildren.
