Introduction to the Liberal Arts

In Introduction to the Liberal Arts, entering first-year students will be challenged to use the liberal arts to explore what it means to be a human person and to live responsibly in society. Each section of FSTY 1310 will pursue this exploration through its focus on a specific theme and its grounding in the disciplines represented by the different instructors.

By the end of the semester, students in each section of FSTY 1310, Introduction to the Liberal Arts, will have:

  • Explored the disciplines represented in their section through reading, discussion, and writing about several challenging texts
  • Been introduced to the different perspectives on the world offered by the disciplines represented in their section
  • Explored ways in which disciplines ask different questions and answer the same questions differently
  • Explored the liberal arts in ways that will be reinforced in their major fields of study and in the general education curriculum
  • Explored the links between different disciplines and their ways of writing
Explored what it means to be human and to live responsibly in the world
  • Practiced moral decision-making and been introduced to some foundational strategies for ethical analysis
  • Developed a sense of a common experience and an identity as a SEU student through interactions with students from other sections and the sharing of ideas, both those common to all the sections and those unique to their own
