"Living in Moreau House with guys who are spiritual, you feel a camaraderie,"
says Chris Torrijas. "You feel welcome when you come in. At first there
are a bunch of new guys who are strangers to you, but we slowly become 'family'." Young men who are students or graduates of St. Edward's University can live
in Christian community with candidates who are studying to be Holy Cross Brothers
or priests. In our campus residence collegiates and candidates share meals,
prayer, household chores, and a weekly Egg ministry feeding the homeless. We
live in Moreau House, which is named after the Congreation's founder Father
Basil Moreau. Holy Cross Brothers, some of whom teach at St. Edward's, live
in the adjoining hall, and students, candidates, and Brothers get together one
evening a week for dinner. "I call the Brothers a walking library" says Joe Ruiz. "Their
different backgrounds, histories, and experiences create a very nice learning
atmosphere." Currently four undergraduates live is Moreau House with Joe, who is studying
to be a Holy Cross priest, and Chris Torrijas who is studying to be a Holy
Cross Brother. Although residents do not necessarily enter with the intention
of discerning a vocation, they enjoy the added spiritual dimension of this experience,
and they find this a natural way to explore their personal spirituality. Spiritual
direction is available for students who want assistance in developing their
faith life. "Eveyone goes on their different spiritual journeys, "says Chris.
"We're all trying to find our way to the same destination, but we all get
there in different ways. If someone does feel he might have a vocation, it gives
him a chance to experience the life firsthand." Life at Moreau House is down to earth and busy as any residence hall. Every
Friday 20 to 25 friends and family come to Moreau House for dinner, the highlight
of everyone's week. For more information contact Brother Robert LeGros, CSC
the Program Director.
