Here's What You Missed - January 2009
Thursday Supervisors’ Lunch Club
January 15, 2009
Topic: UPD Update for Supervisors
Fifty-eight supervisors and managers attended the session.
If you couldn’t make it, Here's What You Missed:
Chief Randy Rendon assumed leadership of the University Police Department in September. He gave a brief overview of his background and what supervisors might expect under his leadership:
- Twenty-nine years law enforcement experience, including 14 years as a supervisor and police chief at four agencies.
- New directions for UPD include:
- Collaboration with the campus community to continue providing the safest educational environment in Austin. To facilitate this goal, supervisors from UPD will solicit, communicate and cooperate with peers to develop safety initiatives and improve community interaction.
- A stronger bridge between UPD and local law enforcement which will dramatically improve the types of services we can provide to our university community.
- Interactions that are more customer-oriented built on positive contacts and professional relationships.
Lt. Dan Beck gave a very informative presentation about the University Police Department, with an emphasis on the university’s Emergency Management Plan*. You may download the handouts here: What Supervisors Should Know.
* One important aspect of the Emergency Management Plan is Topper Text, an information alert system that allows university administrators to send important information to faculty and staff members and students in an emergency situation. Topper Text delivers text messages on a cell phone or by e-mail. In order to receive text messages from the university in an emergency situation, you must sign up for the service. Sgt. Jeff Earle briefly discussed the university’s C-CERT (Campus – Community
Emergency Response Team). The C-CERT program is part of a national campaign supported by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). C-CERT provides an excellent
opportunity for the St. Edward's University Community to play an important role in helping to safeguard, prepare for and respond to major emergencies in our community.
For more information about C-CERT, please download the C-CERT Brochure and Program Procedures and Guidelines, or contact Sgt. Jeff Earle, 448-8444.
Please plan to attend next month’s 3rd Thursday Supervisors’ Lunch Club, when Lawrence Contero and Doris Constantine of Student Financial Services will discuss how to make the student employment experience positive for students and for the university.
