Peace Officer
University Police
Scope: 
Perform responsibilities as a Peace Officer for St. Edward's University. Performs police patrol, investigation, traffic regulation, and related law enforcement activities, consistent with the University mission, vision, principles and priorities.
Responsibilities: 
  • Give directions, information and reasonable aid to students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
  • Represent the University in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Patrol campus facilities to preserve the peace.
  • Respond to emergency & non-emergency radio calls and investigate violations of the law and university policies & regulations
  • Enforce laws, policies and provisions of the Texas Penal Code, and Code of Criminal Procedure, Texas Education Code, Texas Alcoholic Beverage Code, Texas Health and Safety Code, Texas Transportation Code and the St. Edward's University policy manual and code of conduct, in accordance with departmental guidelines.
  • Conduct follow up investigations of crimes committed during assigned shift. Seek out and question victims, witnesses and suspects. Develop leads and tips. Search scenes of crimes for evidence. Analyze and evaluate evidence. Prepare cases for giving testimony and testify in court proceedings;
  • Prepare a variety of reports and records including reports of investigations, field interview reports, and other law enforcement reports and forms;
  • Undertake community oriented police work, consistent with an educational environment, and assist citizens with such matters as crime prevention, drug abuse education, traffic safety, and other related functions;
  • Secure campus facilities and keep unauthorized personnel off University grounds in accordance with current University Police Department policy.
  • Maintain contact with police supervisory personnel to coordinate investigation activities, provide mutual assistance during emergency situations and provide general information about Department activities.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications: 
  • Valid Peace Officer License issued by the Texas Commission of Law Enforcement Standards and Education. Must have all current mandated courses completed.
  • An employee in this position must: Be 21 years or older at time of employment; A U.S. citizen, have a valid Texas Driver's License, and have a good driving record (in compliance with university insurance carrier).
  • Not currently under indictment for any criminal offense;
  • Never been on court-ordered community supervision or probation for any criminal offense above the grade of Class B misdemeanor or a Class B misdemeanor within the last ten years from the date of the court order;
  • Never been convicted of an offense above the grade of a Class B misdemeanor or a Class B misdemeanor within the last ten years
  • Never been convicted of any family violence offense;
  • Not prohibited by state or federal law from operating a motor vehicle;
  • Not prohibited by state or federal law from possessing firearms or ammunition;
  • Be of good moral character, having temperate and industrious habits; be able to learn the applicable laws, policies, and departmental rules and regulations;
  • Be able to communicate orally, via telephone & radio and in writing;
  • Be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, police department personnel, and personnel from other campus departments and other agencies;
  • Be able to follow verbal and written instructions;
  • Be able to exercise sound judgment in evaluating emergency and non-emergency situations and in making decisions;
  • Be able to perform duties on self-initiating basis without constant and/or direct supervision.
  • Must be in good health with the ability to lift 50 pound object and climb four flights of stairs.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required;
  • Ability to complete required in-house training program and 180 day orientation period.
  • Ability to comply with workplace guidelines and attendance requirements.
  • Successful completion of an employment and/or criminal history background check required.
Preferred:
  • Bilingual Speaking
  • Basic computer knowledge of Microsoft Office products, such as Word, Excel, and Access.
  • Prior University or College Law Enforcement Experience
  • One year (30 / + hours) of credit from an accredited college or university.
Salary Description: 
Salary to start in the mid-30’s and is dependent upon education and experience.

Special Conditions: 
Shifts cover various times during the week/weekends/holidays covering a 24 hour schedule. This is a full-time benefits eligible position. Must be available for recall to the University in emergency situations, position is considered “Tier 1 / Mission Critical” work and the department is organized along a standard law enforcement model. They must wear a uniform on duty, are subject to inspection, and are part of a formal chain of command. Peace Officers have no choice on which days or shifts they must work and may not receive two consecutive days off. Peace Officers may need to change work schedules on short notice regardless of personal considerations or childcare needs, and must report for duty in emergency situations such as man-made or natural disasters.
