Holidays
St. Edward's University generally observes the following holidays each year:

Independence Day
Labor Day
SEU Founder's Day
Thanksgiving (Thursday and Friday)
Christmas Eve through New Year's Day
Martin Luther King, Jr.Day
Good Friday
Memorial Day

Regular Staff Employees are generally entitled to either holiday time off or holiday pay at the university's discretion (see "Official Workweek and Hours of Work" section). Such employees are entitled to be compensated for any holiday occurring during an approved paid leave; however, employees on leave without pay on the day before and/or the day after a holiday are not entitled to be compensated for the holiday. Should an otherwise benefits-eligible temporary employee's appointment be extended to more than six months without a break in service, holidays occurring after the Personnel/Payroll Action Notice extending the appointment has been signed by an Administrative Officer and received by the Office of Human Resources will be compensable.

SEU's official work week is Sunday through Saturday. When a university-recognized holiday occurs, full-time regular non-exempt staff employees are entitled to 8 hours of holiday time off to be taken during that same work week. If it is not possible for a supervisor to schedule the employee's time off on the holiday, the employee is entitled to double-time compensation for working on a university-approved holiday (i.e., payment for time worked plus payment for holiday) for hours worked in excess of 32, up to and including 40 hours. If a regular, non-exempt staff employee is not normally scheduled to work on the holiday and the supervisor is unable to schedule time off during that work week to compensate for the holiday, the employee is entitled to payment for hours worked and payment for the holiday at his/her normal rate of pay. Part-time regular non-exempt staff employees are entitled to a proportionate amount of holiday time off or double-time compensation based upon the percentage of employment.

EX: A 50% time (20 hour per week) employee is entitled to 50% of the 8-hour holiday or 4 hours of holiday time off. This employee would work 16 hours and be compensated for 20. If the employee works more than 16 hours, up to and including 20, then those hours over 16 would be compensated at double time.

Note: Non-regular employees are not entitled to benefits, including holidays. See definition of "Non-Regular Employment" under "Employee Categories" section.
