| General Policy
In order to recognize the value of prior St. Edward's University
employment, the university will credit prior eligible SEU
service for the purposes of benefits and salary.
Eligibility
All regular employees are eligible for prior service credit.
Basis
All identifiable prior SEU regular employment will be used to determine the total number of months of prior service. A partial month will count as one full month's credit. (Regular employment is generally defined as an appointment one-half time or greater for 6 months or longer. By definition, temporary appointments are non-regular employment and, as such, are ineligible to establish prior service credit. However, should the employment of a temporary employee extend to more than 6 months without a break in service, each otherwise benefits-eligible month becomes "regular" service and is counted for prior service credit.
Application
Prior Service Credit will impact eligibility for benefits
and salary where length of service is a factor. This may
include such things as eligibility for the retirement plan,
long term disability, annual leave accrual, annual salary
adjustments, service recognition awards, etc.
Procedure
After eligible employees self-identify, a records search
will be conducted. Eligible verified service will be calculated
in full month increments and an adjusted employment date
determined. This date will be used when appropriate.
EX. I: Employee A has two separate periods of prior employment:
1/14/98 - 8/23/98 Work Study Student
11/28/00 - 3/12/01 Library Assistant
Employment as a Work Study Student does not count. Although
the Library Assistant position was occupied less than 6
months, the appointment was regular (half-time or greater,
6 months or longer); therefore, the time counts. The first
and last partial months count as one full month each.
Employee A has five months prior service credit. Upon regular
re-employment 8/21/02, the adjusted employment date would
become 3/21/02. Employee A would be credited with 10 hours
of annual leave per month beginning 4/1/03 and would be
eligible to join the retirement plan 4/1/04.
EX. II: Employee B had no break in service but did have
a change in status that affected benefits eligibility.
9/10/99 - 5/20/00 Regular employment
5/21/00 - 8/21/00 Less than half time
8/22/00 - current Regular employment
Employee B has nine months of prior credit (the only ineligible
months are 6/00 and 7/00). The adjusted employment date
would become 11/22/99. Employee B would be credited with
10 hours of annual leave per month beginning 12/01/99 and
would be eligible to join the retirement plan 12/01/01.
Note: Because of laws regarding retirement plans and contractual
practices or insurance premium due dates, new employees
who request a records search after their first month of
reemployment may have a delayed effective date on adjusted
benefits.
