The School of Humanities educates students in the humanistic, liberal arts tradition. Our disciplines explore individual and communal concerns in relation to the rapidly changing world around us. We offer majors in Art, Communication, English Literature, English Writing and Rhetoric, Graphic Design, Liberal Studies, Philosophy, Photocommunications, Religious Studies, Spanish, and Theater Arts, as well as minors in more than a dozen related areas.
Faculty and students collaborate to enhance the quality of a well-rounded liberal arts education. Our English faculty support the award-winning journals Arete, a student forum for academic writing, and the Sorin Oak Review, featuring students’ creative composition; English faculty also coordinate the Visiting Writers Series and the Visiting Literary Scholars Series. Our Art, Graphic Design, and Photocommunications faculties produce the annual senior art shows and provide the community with other outstanding exhibits at the SEU Fine Arts Gallery. Our Religious Studies and Philosophy departments feature various guest speakers throughout the year to broaden horizons and open minds, all the while striving to impart lessons in morality and ethics to the student body. Our Foreign Languages faculty provide in-depth education about many world cultures to help students better understand and succeed in the expanding global community. Our Music faculty’s direction of the University Chorale, Madrigal Chamber Choir, Mariachi Alas de Oro, jazz band, and the Omni Singers fills the campus and beyond with song. Our Communication department trains young minds to become fluent in the latest forms of modern communication. Our Theater department boasts the award-winning Mary Moody Northen Theater, which stages at least four student-performed productions a year and has a professional affiliation with the Actor’s Equity Association.
It has been said that wisdom is well-used knowledge. We believe that society cannot flourish without wisdom, and so we encourage young people to become not only knowledgeable, but wise.
