Complete this part if you have attainted college-level knowledge and skills from activities outside conventional work and training experiences-- such as hobbies, campus activities, travel, political, and community/social endeavors. All related documentation including videotapes, photographs, art, and projects should be placed in you portfolio immediately behind this page. Begin with the most recent experience and work your way back in time. Use as many sheets as necessary, but remember each experience described should have resulted in the acquisition of knowledge and skills directly applicable to your career as a communication professional.

Brief Description of Activity:

Describe the life experience here. Consider the learning outcomes and competencies you are developing for your Communication Major.

  • Example: Chairperson of Public Relations Committee of Austin Habitat for Humanity (HFH), a non-profit organization that builds low cost homes for persons living in substandard housing. Homes are constructed by means of volunteer labor and "sweat equity" form the future homeowner. Although a student member of the committee, I am involved in decision making and planning for Habitat programs. I serve as one of the organization's liaisons to the local community.

Dates of Activity:

From: May 1993 To: Present (1999)

Dates of Employment:

From: October 1995 To: December 1995

Full-time or Part-time:

Part-time

Approximate hours per month spent of this activity during the specified period:

Indicate the number of hours per month devoted to this life experience.

  • Example: I devote approximately 20 hours per week to this project.

Tasks completed during participation in this activity:

Describe the tasks performed emphasizing the communication activities.

  • Example: Develop semi-annual public relations plan and related media materials, such as press releases; deliver presentations to community groups on the function and needs of Habitat here in Austin; help edit monthly Habitat newsletter and write monthly column; attend certain ad hoc committee meetings geared to problem-solving.

Primary responsibility or focus:

Describe your responsibilities here.

  • Example: My primary duties are to assist the organization by promoting the work of Habitat in this community. I have primary responsibility to work with the public relations aspect of HFH. This entails every aspect of public relations, including media relations, community outreach, print/visual work, promotion of fund-raising events, and developing the PR budget. I work with a committee of three individuals and we meet monthly.

Additional details about this experience:

Describe the activity in detail. What did you experience?

Describe which of the ten Student Learning Outcomes did this life experience fulfill:

Refer to the student learning outcomes section

  • Example: Refer to the student learning outcomes section

Describe how this experience fulfilled these learning outcomes:

Be specific in your description

  • Example: I have learned how to be organized in carrying out my duties. One of the first things I have discovered is the importance of carrying through on delegated tasks in order to share the responsibility and to enhance creativity. The presentations I've made to local organizations have strengthened my public speaking skills and built more self-confidence. New members have joined Habitat as a result of the talks I've made in the community. This is one of the most gratifying aspects of my work with HFH.
Working with deadlines on creative projects has also prepared me for the "real" world issues I'll be facing as a public relations professional. I had to constantly follow-up on aspects of the PR campaign and work diligently with printers, photographers, and other suppliers to see that the various projects were moving at the proper pace.
Finally, my written communications are stronger now. I believe my prose is clear, interesting and informative. Writing the monthly column taught me how to get ideas across succinctly; I practiced the editing skills I learned in college, having helped to edit and revise newsletter articles for the past twelve months. I've also learned much about writing for a particular audience--in this case, volunteers and contributors who are committed to the work of Habitat and the alleviation of suffering.

As a result of completing this work experience, what areas of improvement or skills are still needed in the Student Learning Outcomes?

Identify any skills or competencies you did to work on.

  • Example:
I would like to improve my presentational skills by taking a course on medial and professional presentations including how to design and develop computer-based presentations.
