B. A. (1977) English & German with Sec. Educ. certification, Bucknell University
M.Ed. (1980) TESL, Rhode Island College
Ph. D. (1991) Applied Linguistics, University of Texas at Austin
Additional studies: Albert-Ludwigs Universitat, Freiburg, Germany; Institute of European Studies, Vienna, Austria; and University of Kent, Canterbury, England.
Currently teaching: Rhetoric and Composition II, Rhetoric and Composition II for international students, Capstone.
Recent professional achievements: I attend professional conferences and occasionally present papers. I have published a textbook and numerous articles and have presented research and other papers at national and international conferences.
Personal interests: A constant interest of mine has been both national and international travel. I met my husband in his native Portugal while teaching English there many years ago. Every other summer we try to take our two daughters to Europe to visit relatives and explore Portugal and other countries.
What I like about teaching at St. Edward's: What I like most about teaching at St. Edward's University is the close contact with students in and out of the classroom.
What I like best about working with students: Teaching is nothing if it is not for the students, and St. Edward's encourages a strong student-centered environment through small classes and an informal and friendly campus atmosphere.
My philosophy of teaching: My writing classes are relatively informal and personal so that students can feel challenged yet encouraged trying out new ideas or ways of expressing those ideas. I enjoy and practically demand student participation and a respect for diverse views. I learn so much from my students every day, and that selfish motivating force has kept me teaching for so many years.

Mary Rist, Ph.D.

Professor of English Writing and Rhetoric
Andre Hall 108

About Dr. Mary Rist
B.A. (1979) English, Louisiana State University
M.A. (1981) English, University of Virginia
Ph.D. (1995) Applied Linguistics, University of Texas at Austin
Currently teaching: Courses in the English Writing and Rhetoric core including American Grammar, Text and Discourse Analysis, Revising and Editing, and Current Theories of Rhetoric and Composition. I also teach in the Freshman Studies program whenever possible and supervise summer professional writing internships.
Recent professional achievements: Current Area-Coordinator for English Writing and Rhetoric major; Associate Dean, School of Humanities 2005-2008; Director of Freshman Studies, 1999-2005; Associate Professor of English Writing and Rhetoric. Member and sometime presenter at CCCC on the topics of visual rhetoric and Writing Center practice.
Personal interests: I have lived in Austin since 1990 with my
husband and two sons, who are now in college, a dog and a cat. We all mostly get along by sharing a love of Austin and the Highland Lakes. (OK, the dog's a good swimmer, but the cat is not much of a fan.)
My philosophy of teaching: Teaching has always been a great deal of
fun for me, and I really enjoy watching students that I have had as
freshman grow into wonderful adults in their four years here. I feel
blessed in having a job that allows me to meet so many new people
each semester and to talk seriously with them about issues and ideas
important to us all. I love reading everything; reading is my only
true addiction in life, I think. I enjoy teaching students about
grammar and style in writing and how both of them go a long way toward effective
self-presentation.
