COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
CHIN 1311 - Beginning Chinese I
Chinese 1311 is the beginning course in Chinese language. The emphasis of this class will be on developing conversational skills in Chinese. The course teaches Modern Standard Chinese, the official language of the People's Republic of China and Taiwan. The dialect taught in this course is Mandarin, also known as "putonghua", "guoyu", and Beijing dialect. The course also provides opportunities for students to develop basic reading skills needed to function in contemporary China. No previous knowledge of Chinese is required. Background information on China's history, culture and society will be introduced as an element of the course.
CHIN 1312 - Beginning Chinese II
CHIN 1312 continues to build upon the foundations laid in CHIN 1311. The emphasis of the course is on speaking and reading. Students will also be introduced to the writing system and study basic grammar and vocabulary in Chinese. This course allows students to further develop speaking, reading, and writing skills needed to function in contemporary China. The dialect taught in this course is Mandarin. Background information on China's history, culture and society will be introduced as an element of the course.
