| Welcome! |
| The Hebrew Program at St. Edward’s University endeavors
to broaden and deepen a student’s international perspective
while providing an academic foundation in a vibrant foreign
language. The study of Hebrew may be especially attractive
to students who are interested in Religious Studies (in
particular the study of the Bible), Semitic languages, and
Middle Eastern culture and politics. The program is structured
so that students receive multiple and diverse opportunities
to interact with the language, for example, field trips,
dinners, films and popular music. There are four courses
in the program. |
| The emphasis of Topics in Hebrew I and II is to provide
students with the foundations of Hebrew grammar. Students
become familiar with Hebrew script, work on pronunciation
and develop basic reading skills. Students subsequently
increase their vocabulary and build up compositional skills,
while mastering the conjugation and parsing of verbs. While
the first two courses in the sequence are aimed at introducing
students to grammar, the third and fourth courses of St.
Edward’s Hebrew program are especially designed to
give students opportunities to read classical and standard
Hebrew texts. In working with these texts, students develop
translation skills that are sensitive to culture and history. |

Students of HEBR 1311 gather at "Bet
Bautch"
(the home of Professor Kelley Coblentz Bautch) to enjoy
a dinner of Mediterranean cuisine and a showing of Fiddler
on the Roof. |
