| HEBR 1311 Topics in Hebrew I |
| Students in HEBR 1311 learn the Hebrew alphabet and sentence
structure and are also able to compose basic sentences.
They learn substantial vocabulary common to both Biblical
and Modern Hebrew, as well as the construct and absolute
state of nouns. Students also work on the conjugation of
participles for both strong and weak verbs. Students also
work on developing conversational skills in Hebrew. 3 hours. |
| HEBR 1312: Topics in Hebrew II |
| Students in HEBR 1312 continue to build upon the foundations
laid in HEBR 1311. Students are introduced to the verbal
system, first learning to conjugate the qal perfect of
the strong verb. Thereafter, students are introduced to
the imperfect, jussive, cohortative, imperative and infinitive
construct of the verbs. Following mastery of the qal form,
students learn the niphal, piel and the hiphil verbs. Students
also are exposed to pronominal suffixes. Vocabulary and
conversational skills are reinforced. 3 hours. |
| HEBR 2311: Intermediate Hebrew I |
| Students in HEBR 2311 continue the study of Hebrew grammar
and vocabulary beyond the introductory level so that a
student is able to parse any verb form that is encountered.
In this course a primary goal is to develop intermediate
reading proficiency in biblical Hebrew, with attention
to narrative syntax. Thus, the biblical reading will feature
portions of the Torah and the Prophets that tell the story
of ancient Israel. Texts treating life in modern Israel
will also be read, and conversational skills will be further
refined. 3 hours. |
| HEBR 2312: Intermediate Hebrew II |
| Students in HEBR 2312 will develop increased fluency
in the reading of the Hebrew Bible by continuing to master
narrative prose and beginning to translate poetry, including
selections from the Psalms. In time students will read
some texts from Qumran and portions of Mishnaic Hebrew.
Students will also develop greater fluency with modern
Hebrew as it is spoken today. 3 hours. |
