Course Descriptions
Students with any high school credit in Japanese should take the placement test before registering for their first SEU Japanese language course.

Japanese 1310 Introduction to the Culture of Japan 3 hours
Taught in English.
Introduction to the contemporary culture of Japan and the historical development of cultural norms, customs, popular and fine arts of the Japanese people. Topics addressed include geography of Japan and the Far East , contemporary values, religious, social and political structure. Examples of Japanese literature in translation, music, film, video and other media will supplement traditional textbooks as source material for assignments and class discussion.

Japanese 1311 (Japanese I - Introductory Level)
3 hours
A beginning course stressing comprehension, speaking, reading and writing skills. The course introduces elementary communication skills, one of the basic Japanese writing systems (hiragana), basic grammar, and Japanese culture. Extensive listening outside of class is an integral part of the course. Fall.

Japanese 1312 (Japanese II - Beginner/Intermediate Level)
3 hours
This course is designed for beginning-intermediate students of Japanese, emphasizing the use of the Japanese language through listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Emphasis will be placed on practicing Japanese native scripts - both hiragana and katakana, as well as the Chinese characters (kanji). Extensive listening outside of class is an integral part of the course. Prerequisite: JAPN 1311 or placement test. Spring.

1313 Introduction to Technical Japanese I
Japanese 1313 introduces English-speaking students to the fundamental vocabulary and grammar of technical Japanese used in scientific and technical journals in the fields of computer science, mathematics, chemistry and life sciences, as well as articles on the sciences in publications written for a broader public. Students in the first semester course will learn a very limited number of written kanji characters (derived from Chinese) and the syllabic characters for a more extensive, highly productive technical reading vocabulary. Primary emphasis will be placed on reading skills, but students will learn the pronunciation of the core vocabulary, as well as the pronunciation of characters in the syllabic writing systems. A special textbook for technical Japanese and computer assisted instruction are used in conjunction with classroom instruction. This course is designed primarily for students in the physical and biological sciences but may be of interest to students in Business, Humanities, New College and MBA programs. Background in at least one science is advisable. JAPN 1313 and 1314 (a two semester sequence) satisfy the undergraduate foreign language requirement. No previous knowledge of Japanese language or of Chinese characters is necessary.
Recommended course work prior to enrollment: Sophomore standing and at least 12 hours of college level science/computer science credit. Students without science or technology background should see instructor before registering. 3 hours.

1314 Introduction to Technical Japanese II
Japanese 1314 continues the development of reading and dictionary skills and kanji character recognition in written technical Japanese begun in JAPN 1313, along with extensive practice in reading. At the end of Japanese 1314 the student can expect to read, with extensive use of a Japanese-English dictionary, a 5-7 page article in the student's academic field of interest. Recommended prior to enrollment: Sophomore standing and at least 12 hours of college level science/computer science credit. Students without science or technology background should see instructor before registering. Prerequisite: JAPN 1313. See JAPN 1313. 3 hours

Japanese 2311 (Japanese III - Intermediate Level)
3 hours
The semester course begins with a short review of basic grammatical patterns taught at the beginning-intermediate level level. There is continued development of vocabulary, listening comprehension, reading and writing skills as well as some focus on Japanese culture and current events. Oral language activities stress conversation skills needed for ordinary interactions with Japanese speakers. (Prerequisite: JAPN 1312)

Japanese 2312 (Japanese IV - Intermediate/Advanced Level) 3 hours
The semester course is designed for intermediate-advanced students of Japanese. This course will emphasize and encourage the use of the Japanese language through listening, speaking, reading and writing, in a context meant to be socially relevant, interactive, and cumulative. (Prerequisite: JAPN 2311)
