PERFORMING ARTS SUMMER CAMPS 2009

Fractured Fairy Tales Creative Drama Camp
June 8–12,
9 a.m.–12:30 p.m.

Join us for a fun-filled morning of acting with retellings of some of your favorite fairy tales! Students will learn about acting (and stage craft) from the ground up in this fast-paced week of theatrical fun and games.

  • Instructor: Gwen Kelso
  • ages: 6–11
  • Cost: $150*

 

Musical Theater for Youth
June 8–12, 1:30–5 p.m.

Learn to be a “triple threat” — it’s never too early. This weeklong camp introduces students to what Broadway professionals experience through daily singing, dancing and acting workshops.

  • Instructors: Michael McKelvey and members of the SummerStock Austin staff
  • ages: 6–15
  • Cost: $150*
    *If you register for both camps your total tuition will be $275.

 

Theater Intensive for the College-Bound Student
June 15–19, 9 a.m.–4:30 p.m.

This workshop will help serious high school theater arts and musical theater students get ready for auditions for national theater programs in the fall and spring. Topics to be covered include:

  • Song selection and preparation
  • Classical monologues
  • Dance auditions
  • Interview skills
  • Application process
  • Auditions
  • Theater program selection
  • Instructors: Michael McKelvey, artistic director of The Performers’ Workshop and numerous guest instructors from the Austin Theater Community
  • ages: incoming high school juniors and seniors (sophomores will be accepted if space allows)
  • Cost: $275 (high school teachers may audit any and all of the intensives for $100)
    Note: McKelvey and his staff have coached and prepped students who have attended Julliard, Carnegie Mellon, CCM, Miami, USC, Webster and many other outstanding theater institutions.

 

Beginning Guitar and Piano for Youth and Teens

Back by popular demand, our guitar and piano workshops help those who always wanted to learn to play, but were just waiting for the right time to start. This is the right time. Guitar students will have to provide their own instruments.

  • June 15–19ages: 6–12
    • Instructors: Darin Layne (guitar) and TBA (piano)
    • Session 1: 9 a.m.–12:30 p.m. • guitar
    • Session 2: 1–4:30 p.m. • piano
  • June 22–26ages 13–17
    • Instructors: Darin Layne (guitar) and TBA (piano)
    • Session 1: 9 a.m.–12:30 p.m. • guitar
    • Session 2: 1–4:30 p.m. • piano

Cost: $150 (one session); $250 (two sessions)

 

Spotlight on Opera
June 22–July 12,

Always wanted to be in the spotlight? Here’s your chance to star in your own fully staged opera scenes and concerts with piano accompaniment. Hone your performance skills while receiving coaching and direction from professional performers, voice teachers, pianists and directors. Requirements: Must be able to read music and arrive at the workshop with assigned roles fully learned and memorized. Assignments are made by audition. Singers are responsible for obtaining their own musical scores. Auditions: March 28 and May 2 at St. Edward’s University. Singers must provide a résumé, bio and headshot for consideration. They also must present two contrasting opera arias with at least one in French, Italian, German, Russian or Czech. A pianist will be provided for an additional $10 fee, or you may bring your own.

  • Instructors: Cindy Sadler, Bruce Cain, Gustavo Bianchi and Chuck Dillard
  • Meetings: Monday, Wednesday and Friday • 5:30–9 p.m.
    Saturday • 10 a.m. –1 p.m.
  • Performances: Saturday, July 11 • 2 p.m.; and Sunday, July 12 • 2 p.m.
  • Cost: $300

 

Shakespeare on the Hill
June 29–July 10*, 9 a.m.–4:30 p.m.

Be a part of one of Austin’s most popular theater workshops for high school and middle school actors. For the 10th year, Austin Shakespeare is teaming with St. Edward’s University to bring its most comprehensive workshop ever. Workshops topics include:

  • Acting
  • Text analysis
  • Stage combat
  • Voice
  • Shakespearean history

The two-week workshop concludes with a performance at Mary Moody Northen Theatre.

  • Instructors: Ann Ciccolella, artistic director of Austin Shakespeare; Gwen Kelso, company member of Austin Shakespeare; Michael McKelvey,artistic director of SummerStock Austin; and numerous guest artists
  • ages 13–17
  • Cost: $450
    *July 3 is an optional day for those leaving town for the holiday weekend.

 

All-State Choral Music Workshop
August 6–8, 9 a.m.–2 p.m

A three-day crash course to help Austin area high school choral singers learn music in preparation for the upcoming Texas Music Educators Association All-State Choir auditions in the fall.

  • Instructors: Morris Stevens Jr., Ph.D., Michael McKelvey, DMA and guest choir directors from the Austin area
  • ages: students entering grades 9–12
