This study is a project for the course Knowing Other Cultures in the Master of Liberal Arts program at St. Edward's University. During the Fall 2000 semester I spent many hours observing and visiting with theatre students at St. Edward's. In the course of several weeks I learned many things about the program and the individuals involved. I extend my gratitude to everyone at Mary Moody Northen Theatre, and especially to all of the students that helped me gain an understanding of their world.
Goals -

My intention in choosing to study theatre students as a subculture was to gain an understanding of what brings students to the program and what motivates them to participate in theatre. To gain a better and more complete understanding of the levels of commitment, productivity, and energy required to participate in the Theatre program. Identifying behaviors, language and activities that are unique to theatre was a good way to get to know them and to find a common ground. I found that most of the students were quite open to sharing their feelings about theatre. And, most of them are amazingly thoughtful about their motivations.

I also hoped to find ways to promote the theatre program via the St. Edward's website. Providing additional sections to the theatre web site which will highlight all of the parts of creating a play, not just performances, seemed like a good way to attract students with a variety of skills and interests. Because the program offers four areas of specialization, I wanted to find ways to showcase activities related to all of them. During the course of this project I observed and photographed all aspects of a production and gained a great respect for the skills and committment of the students.
