Collaborative learning is a broad term for educational approaches involving joint intellectual effort by students, or students and teachers together. Collaborative learning is based on a number of different learning theories including social constructivism, cooperative learning, communities of practice, connectivism, and situated learning, amongst others.

Instructional Computing offer the following collaborative learning tools to the larger SEU community:

Blogs

A blog is similar to a journal that can be public or private and with one or many contributors

Wikis

A Wiki is a collaborative website that can be viewed and modified by anyone with a web browser. Wikis may be accessed online, or you may set-up an RSS feed so that subscribers are notified of new entries via email or mobile devices.

Second Life

Second Life is a 3-D, user-generated virtual world in which participants use customized “avatars” to interact in-world, communicate and collaborate with other participants.

Web Conferencing

Web conferencing allows instructors and students to connect with each other from separate locations using an Internet connection. Whether you want to have an online classroom, hold virtual office hours or facilitate cross-institutional collaboration

Podcasting

Podcasting is a term inspired by the Apple Computer Corporation’s IPod. Podcasting refers to any hardware and software combination that allow users to download audio from the internet to a computer or another device (mp3 player, IPod) for later listening. Unlike other media, users have complete control over when they hear the content.
