Note: Turnitin Assignments are automatically added to your Blackboard Gradebook.

Navigating to the Assignment Manager

  1. Select Assignments from the left side navigation bar
  2. Click the Edit View button in the upper left area of the window.

    *TurnItIn Assignments may also be accessed through the Course Tools submenu in the Control Panel

  3. Adding New TurnItIn Assignments

  4. From the +Select: drop-down choose Turnitin Assignment and click Go.
  5. The Add Turnitin Assignment window will open
  6. Choose to create a new: paper assignment or revision assignment
    • Paper Assignment: Choose this option for the first draft of a paper or if the paper will not go through revisions.
    • Revision Assignment: This option is only available for previously created paper assignments. It is useful when you wish a paper to go through one or more revisions. You may choose whether the revision counts for a grade.
  7. Add an assignment title
  8. Choose a point value (optional); leave this field blank if no grade should be associated with the assignment. If you wish the grade to be marked as complete/incomplete you may assign a point value of 100. When grading the assignment, a complete receives a grade of 100; an incomplete would receive a 0. You may skip to step 8.
  9. If you selected revision assignment¸ you must choose the original paper on which the revision is based.
  10. Choose a point value for the revision (optional); this grade is distinct from the original paper’s grade.
  11. Choose the dates for the assignment
    • start date: When the assignment becomes visible to the student
    • due date: When the assignment is due
    • post date: When the originality report becomes available to the student
  12. Click on More Options for additional features.
  13. Enter any special assignment instructions you have (optional)
  14. Choose whether or not to generate originality report.

    Allow students see the originality report? Yes/no. If your students have been given access to Originality Reports, they can view their submission and report by clicking on an assignment’s View/Complete link. Please note that by default students cannot access reports. To allow student access to the reports, you need to set up the option when you create the Turnitin assignment.

  15. Choose when to generate originality reports for student submissions.

    Options for originality report generation

    • Immediately (first report is final): students are only allowed one submission
    • Immediately (can overwrite previous reports until due date): students may overwrite previous submissions
    • On due date (generate report on the due date): Report only generated on the due date.
  16. Allow submissions after the due date? Yes / no.
  17. Check papers against other submissions?

    Choose Standard paper repository if you want papers submitted to this assignment indexed in the turnitin database. If you do not want papers submitted to this assignment stored in the database and used for future plagiarism searches, select no repository.

  18. Search options: What type of sources you would like to compare student submissions against?
  19. Click “Submit” to complete the Turnitin Assignment creation.

Note: A Grade Center entry is automatically created for every Turnitin Assignment. Once an assignment has been added to your course, both you and your students can submit a paper to the assignment.
