Computer Lab Notes for Campus Labs
If you are running this tutorial in a computer lab and want to practice the concepts that you
are reading/learning/studying about, you need to be aware
there are certain things that you WILL NOT
be able to do. The blocked operations are listed below by
lesson.
- Lesson 1 - What are the Parts of a Computer?
- Proper shut down and boot up procedures for both
Macintosh and Windows computers is discussed in
this lesson. DO NOT shutdown and boot up the computers
in the lab. If for some reason your computer becomes
inoperable, please ask a lab assistant for help.
- The computers in all computer labs do not have speakers.
- Lesson 2 - Operating System and Desktop
- DO NOT shutdown and/or reboot the computers in
the lab. If for some reason your computer becomes
inoperable, please ask a lab assistant for help.
- Lesson 4 - Icons
- Macintosh - Folders and aliases can only be created
on edshare or any portable storage device. The only storage device available
to you will be edshare or any portable storage device. The printer icon will not be found on the
desktop.
- Windows - Folders and shortcuts can only be created
on edshare or any portable storage device. The only storage device available
to you will be edshare or any portable storage device. You will not be able to open the Printers
Folder.
- Lesson 5 - Menus:
- If you need help locating a particular application
and cannot find it, ask a lab assistant.
- Lesson 6 - File Management:
- Macintosh - The Find dialog box is called Find
File not Sherlock, but it basically works the same.
If you need help, contact a lab assistant. Moving,
copying, naming, deleting, creating folders and
aliases will be limited to items on your floppy
disk. Remember, CD ROM's are not permitted in the
lab. You will not be able to add items to the Apple
Menu.
- Windows - Moving, copying, renaming, deleting,
creating folders and shortcuts will be limited to
items on your floppy disk. You will not be able to
add items to the Start Menu.
- Lesson 8 - Maintenance and Help
- Macintosh - If the computer stalls, ask a lab
assistant for help. You will not be able to allocate
RAM. Do not reboot the computers. If you think you
need to run Disk First Aid on your floppy disk,
ask for help. The Help Menu will look a little different
than the images shown in this tutorial. Even though
they look different they should be self explanatory,
but if you need help ask.
- Windows - If the computer stalls, ask a lab assistant
for help. Do not reboot the computers. You will
not be able to run ScanDisk. If you think you need
to run ScanDisk on your floppy disk, ask for help. The help section for the Windows operating
system should closely match the Windows computers
in the lab. If for some reason you get lost and
need help, ask.
