Section 4 - Navigating through the WWW

Now that you are familiar with the tool bar and other elements of Internet Explorer and Firefox, it's time to start looking at web pages. As you noticed when you first opened your web browser, a web page appeared automatically. This is your home page. The home page on computers at St. Edward's University will be similar to one of the two mentioned below.

If you are on campus you will see either the SEU home page or an affiliate such as the library home page. (Designating a new home page will be discussed later.)

There are three ways to move or open another page via the web browser:

• Type in the URL address in the Address Field, paying close attention to case sensitivity, spelling, and punctuation marks. Then press <enter> or <return>.

• Move to another page from a link on the current page. Hyperlinks (links) are the connectors that enable us to go from one page to the next without needing to type in a URL address. Links are indicated whenever your mouse pointer is transformed from an arrow to a "pointing hand." Pointing handMost text links are displayed in a different color of text. Links may also be represented by images.

• Open a new page from the File Menu.
