Section 5 - What are print indexes?
Print indexes are periodical indexes in paper format that
organize periodical articles by subject. Subject terms listed
in the indexes are in alphabetical order. Some examples
of print indexes are:
· Readers' Guide to Periodical Literature
· Social Sciences Index
· The New York Times Index
Since most electronic indexes do not index articles prior
to the 1980s, print indexes can be helpful in researching
historical topics. The Library has some print indexes dating
back to the early 1900s. If you want to read articles written
during the Vietnam War to gain an understanding of people's
feelings about the war, a print index from the 1960s or
1970s may be helpful in locating these articles.
