Windows 98
Cannot Establish Network Protocol
You must have both (and only) TCP/IP and Dial-up Adapter in
the Network Control Panel. To verify:
- Select the Control Panel under "My Computer".
- Double-click
the Network icon. In the Network Configuration, check to
see that you have bothe TCP/IP and Dial-up Adapter. If you
have MORE than these two, it is generally a good idea to remove
all other components and start from scratch. To do this,
click on each component, and then click on the Remove button.
- If
TCP/IP is not on the list under Network, click on Add.
- Double-Click
on Protocol.
- Click on Microsoft on the left hand side of the
window.
- With Microsoft selected, click on TCP/IP on the right
hand side of the window.
- Click on OK and then OK again.
If you still cannot connect OR if multiple network components
continue to show up in the Network Configuration Window, you
may have to check the bindings for the Dial-up Adapter.
To do this:
- Click on Dial-Up Adapter
- Click on the Properties button.
- Click on Bindings option Tab.
TCP/IP should be checked. (TCP/IP will not display in the
Dial-up Adapter Bindings if it is not in the Network Configuration.
- Click
on OK to exit the Dial-up Adapter Properties.
You should now have successfully configured your Network Protocol.
- Click on OK to exit the Network Configuration window.
- Restart
your computer when prompted.
