Configuring Windows XP for Wireless Access in the Residence Halls and by On Campus Residents on the Main St. Edward's Campus

Wireless access in the residence halls is available in public areas of Doyle, East, Teresa, Dujarie and Basil Moreau Halls as well as in all on campus apartments. In the traditional residence halls some bleedthrough of the wireless signal may be available in individual rooms. However, the wireless connection in those rooms should not be considered a replacement for the "wired" or ethernet connection available in every room. Wireless connections are slower and much more susceptible to interference from other devices such as 2.4 GHz cordless phones, microwaves, and wireless speakers.

Wireless access in the St. Edward's University Residence Halls and on the main campus by St. Edward's residents requires concurrent login to Clean Access. It is advisable that you make your initial connection to the network using an ethernet cable as wireless connections may be too slow for the initial login process. During this initial connection you will download Clean Access, update the Windows operating system with critical patches and install and update Symantec AntiVirus. See the instructions for Clean Access.

Connecting to the Wireless Network (stedwards)

Part 1: Select the stedwards wireless network
Part 2: Login to Clean Access
Part 3: Disconnecting from the wireless network

Part 1: Select the stedwards wireless network

Connect to SSID (Service Set Identifier) "stedwards":

  1. Go to the Control Panel.
  2. Select Network Connections and then Wireless connection.
  3. Scan and select "stedwards" from the available networks.
  4. Check the box next to "Allow me to connect to the selected wireless network, even though it is not secure," then click on Connect. If you are unable to connect, please see Wireless Troubleshooting.
* Note: Signal strength should be between the levels of "low" and "excellent" for a reliable connection.

Part 2: Login to Clean Access
Right-click on the Clean Access icon on your task bar and select Login. You are now connected to the wireless network.

Part 3: Disconnecting from the wireless network

If you are planning on connecting your laptop to the "wired" or ethernet jack in your room, you will need to log out of Clean Access also. Right-click on the Clean Access icon on your task bar and select Logout. When you have reconnected to the ethernet remember to log back into Clean Access.

* If you are unable to connect, please see Wireless Troubleshooting.
