E-mail
Addresses
All St. Edward's
University faculty, staff and students have a St.
Edward's e-mail account. Use the online directory to
find a specific e-mail address. All
faculty, staff and students will use the e-mail address
login@stedwards.edu.
Web Mail
Zimbra is both our e-mail server and our web-based e-mail application. Zimbra Webmail now has a "Standard (HTML)" version that works on slower connections and on Firefox, IE and Safari 3.0. Zimbra Standard will not work on versions of Safari before 3.0. Zimbra Mobile is supported on most cell phones with web services.
- Web
mail may be accessed via Zimbra
Webmail or Zimbra Webmail Standard.
- Using
Zimbra
- Zimbra Webmail Standard is a lighter version that will work on slow connections and most web browsers. You can select the Standard (HTML) version from the drop down menu below the Log In button.
POP Mail
- Incoming e-mail using POP settings (Eudora,
Outlook, Mac Mail, Thunderbird) uses Secure POP
settings. Outgoing e-mail will use an Authenticated
SMTP server. Instructions for setting up an e-mail
application to use Secure POP and Authenticated
SMTP server.
IMAP Mail
IMAP applicaitons may also be used with our mail server, but retention of mail must be carefully considered by anyone choosing this option. If you would like more information about IMAP options please contact the Computer Help Desk.
CARS Mail
- Pine is a text-based e-mail
application available in CARS/Jenzabar-CX.
Spam filtering: St.
Edward's has implemented a spam filtering
application, CanIt. For more information on spam filtering
and instructions on setting up e-mail filters for supported
e-mail applications see Spam
Filtering at St. Edward's University.
E-mail Safety: All e-mail on St. Edward's servers
is scanned for attachments which might contain viruses.
All university owned computers and all student
computers have access to free virus protection. However,
new ways of infiltrating your computer's defenses are
created everyday. For more information on protecting
your computer and your privacy from "phishing", viruses
and worms see E-mail
Safety.
Forwarding E-mail: Beginning May 18, 2009 e-mail forwarding will no longer be offered for new student accounts nor may students change existing forwards. The primary reason for this is to insure that we have the technical ability to research any problem with email delivery to students. After discussion with the Computer Users group, the TLTR, and the Executive VP and Provost it has been decided that we will no longer support additional forwarding of student email accounts. (Existing forwards can remain active, but no changes can be made to forwards.) This will not affect Alumni forwarding.
Alumni E-Mail Forwarding: E-mail forwarding allows St. Edward's alumni to forward e-mail to any other account and gives you a “portable” address that you can use with family, friends and colleagues. See the Frequently Asked Questions for more information.
E-mail Retention: E-mail
that is not forwarded is stored on the mail server
for 365 days. Mail older than 365 days will be deleted.
E-mail Quotas: Mail left on the
server may not exceed the following quotas:
- Students: 250 MB
- Faculty and Staff: 500 MB
Once your quota has been exceeded mail sent to your
account will be returned to the sender with a message
that the recipient's mail box is over quota. You can
check your quota by logging into Zimbra WebMail. The
quota status bar isin the upper right-hand corner. Instructions
for removing mail from the server using Eudora and Outlook.
Attachments: The file
size limit for attachments is 10 MB. In addition,
attachments with extensions commonly used to convey
viruses are automatically stripped from incoming or
outgoing e-mails. These include attachments with the
extensions .zip, .exe. and .mdb. See E-mail
Safety for a complete list of restricted attachment
extensions.
Restricted Aliases and E-Newsletters :
Aliases or email lists for specific groups of students
are available to faculty and staff with permission.
See the Restricted
Alias and E-Newsletters section
for instructions and available aliases. Aliases are
also automatically created for every EdShare "share" created
by faculty or staff.
Class Aliases and Advisee Aliases
Class
aliases are also created
for every class for use by instructors as are advisee aliases for use by advisors. Please put these aliases in the BCC line of your email. These aliases should not be made available to students.
