If I bring my home computer in, will you fix it for free? The Computer Help Desk can only assist you with software problems. Opening the computer to work on hardware problems could violate your warranty. We can help you determine if the problem is software or hardware related, but if it is hardware related you should contact the vendor under which it is warrantied.

How do I backup my computer?
You should only backup your documents, e-mail and web browser bookmarks. You don't need to backup software applications. You may backup up to EdShare as that server is itself backed up nightly. You may also backup to removable media such as a flash drive or a CD-ROM.

Windows

  • Back up the My Documents folder
  • If you are using Eudora for e-mail, back up the entire Eudora (or Qualcomm) folder
  • Back up Favorites for IE or bookmark.html for Netscape

Macintosh OS X

  • Backup the Documents folder
  • If you are using Eudora for e-mail, back up the entire Eudora folder
  • Back up Favorites for IE or bookmark.html for Netscape

How do I tell what version of software am I using?
Open up the software and go to the Help command on the Menu Bar. Generally there is an "About Microsoft Word" or "About insert the name of your software here" command. Clicking on it, will open up a dialog box that indicates the software version and/or year.
