What is a Topper Text Group?

Channels – when using Topper Text, you’ll see the term “Channels”. Channels refer to any source of information. Types of channels include the St. Edward's Broadcast group (e.g., alerts, school closings), courses (e.g., course announcements), and groups (e.g., social, student government).

Groups are created and maintained by one person. Only the creator or manager of a group can send messages to that group.

Steps to set up a Group

  1. Create Group and add member email addresses
  2. Send invitation.
  3. Invitees log into TopperText and join or subscribe to the group.
  4. Group members select method for receiving messages -- text messages or email.

How Do I Create a Group?

  1. Login to Blackboard. All faculty, staff and students will login to Blackboard using the same username and password used for e-mail, web registration or faculty/staff advising. To login to Blackboard go to http://blackboard.stedwards.edu.
  2. Click on the link for Topper Text, located at the end of the Tools menu. tools menu
  3. Click the Create Group button on the home page. find_groups button
  4. Click on the link for Groups.
  5. Click on the Create Group button.
  6. In the Create Group screen enter a name, description and click on the drop down box next to "public" and select private to create your group as a private group.
  7. Click on Create.
  8. In the Group Names area you will see a list of all the groups you manage. To invite people to your group click on the + to the right of Manage Group.
  9. Click on the link to Invite People.
  10. Enter the email addresses of the people you wish to invite.
    Seperate email addresses with commas.
  11. You can add an optional "Welcome Message". The Sign Up instructions cannot be changed.
  12. Click on Send Invitations to send an email invitation to the recipients.
  13. Recipients must Join the group using the Invite code provided in the email invitation. Once they have joined they must also select the method by which they wish to receive messages (text messages or emails). See Subscribing to a Group.
