FTP stands
for File Transfer Protocol. This protocol is a method
for transferring files from one computer to another
over the internet. FTP software includes products such
as WS_FTP for Windows, WINSCP for Windows, and Fetch
for Macintosh. These programs should be available on
every university owned computer. They are also included
in the SEU Network Installer for students. You may
download copies of this software for your computer
from http://www.frc.stedwards.edu/installers.
FTP software is primarily used for publishing web content.
Web development software such as Dreamweaver includes
built in FTP capabilities.
Secure FTP (SFTP) is a separate protocol from FTP
that enables you to fully encrypt all file transfers
and prevent unauthorized access to your data, files,
user names, and passwords. Secure FTP is currently
enabled on the servers aux.stedwards.edu, admin.stedwards.edu
and edshare.stedwards.edu. Beginning
January 4, 2006 all transactions to these servers will
need to be conducted via SFTP. Secure FTP software includes WinSCP and Fetch
5. Dreamweaver MX 2004 and Dreamweaver 8 also support
Secure FTP connections.
