IT Support for
Microsoft Vista and Office 2007
The newest Microsoft operating system, Windows Vista and the latest
Windows version of Office, Office
2007, were released at the end
of January. Information
Technology staff are evaluating the Vista for both software compatibility
and support issues.
At this time, IT does not see a benefit in upgrading university
computers to Windows Vista or Office 2007 and will not be supporting
its installation on campus until Summer 2008.
.
Factors considered in this decision:
- Many software applications and hardware peripherals are not
compatible with Vista at this time. Things you use every
day, like printers, may no longer work with Vista. We
are continuing to research the compatibility of campus printers
and other peripherals with Vista.
- The system is very different from past Microsoft operating
systems. It will take time for IT support technicians
and system administrators to test with our existing applications
and network infrastructure.
- The academic licensing structure for Vista is different and
the means to support this change have yet to be determined.
Please note: None of St. Edward's computers are currently licensed
for Vista. We strongly discourage the installation of Vista on
any St. Edward's University owned computer. Windows Vista is
not installed in computer labs or classrooms on campus.
The Computer
Help Desk is prepared to assist students with Vista in getting
connected to our on campus network from the Residence Halls.
Students using Vista and connecting in the residence halls and
on campus apartments will need to get an updated version of Symantec
AntiVirus to connect to our network. Only Symantec AntiVirus
10.2 or above will work with Microsoft Vista.
