Instructions for Using Ad-Aware
 

Ad-Aware Professional is available for St. Edward's University faculty, staff and students. Ad-aware is used to scan your computer for malware, spyware, adware, etc. It requires up-to-date definition files, just as Symantec AntiVirus does.

Installing Ad-Aware
  1. You may download a copy from http://www.frc.stedwards.edu/installers.
  2. Login with your St. Edward's login and password.
  3. Scroll down to the Anti-Virus/Security Installers section and click on the link for PC to the right of Ad-Aware.
  4. The file aawsepro.exe will be downloaded. Save it to your desktop.
  5. Double-click on aawsepro.exe to launch the installer.
  6. Click on the box to accept the license agreement and click on Next.
  7. Continue clicking on Next to accept the defaults.
  8. When Ad-Aware is finished installing, leave the boxes checked to Perform a full system scan now and to Update definition file now.
  9. Click on Finish.

Updating Definition Files
You need to keep the Ad-Aware definition files current. New malware is created every day. Lavasoft, the creator of Ad-Aware, releases new definitions regularly. You should check for new definitions each time you run Ad-Aware.

  1. When you first open Ad-Aware (Start/Programs ->Lavasoft Ad-aware SE Professional) you will see the Ad-Aware screen.
  2. Click on the link to Check for updates now in the lower right corner of the window.
  3. Click on Connect to connect to the Lavasoft site to check for updates.
  4. If there are updates you will be prompted to download them. Click on Finish when the update process is complete.

Running Ad-Aware

  1. Go to Start/Programs and select Lavasoft Ad-aware SE Professional and then Ad-Aware SE Professional.
  2. The Ad-Aware application will launch.
  3. Click on the Scan now button.
  4. Ad-Aware will scan your computer for possible malware. This may take several minutes.
  5. When Ad-Aware is done performing the system scan you will be presented with a Results window listing any possible malware.

    To select all of the objects found, right-click in the results window. From the pop-up menu click on Select All Objects.
  6. Click on Next.
  7. You will see a quick notice that files have been quarantined and/or deleted.
