Steps for Moving a Faculty Web Site from the Current Server to EdShare

If you currently have a web site on the St. Edward's web site, you will need to move your files to the new server by May 30, 2006. Computer Services will redirect, upon request, your current web address to your new web address. All new faculty web addresses will be of the form http://myweb.stedwards.edu/loginname. The loginname will be the same one you use to access the Faculty EdWeb site. To upload web sites you will use the same loginname and password used for Faculty EdWeb, EdShare, and e-mail.

Your new web address will be http://myweb.stedwards.edu/loginname.

If you would like assistance with this process, please contact Instructional Computing.

Instructions for Moving Your Web Site

  1. Copy your web site files from your current web server, aux.stedwards.edu, to the new server site, edshare.stedwards.edu\public_html. The public_html folder is created automatically for every faculty, staff and student--you don't need to create one. Your web pages, images, and other web documents must be stored in the public_html folder located in your personal folder on EdShare. On campus, using a Windows XP operating system, your path to public_html is S:\public_html.

If you have a copy of all of your web files on your office or home computer, you can upload them directly to EdShare. If you don't have a local copy you can download the files from your current server, aux.stedwards.edu, to your computer's hard drive and move them from there to Edshare/public_html.

Instructions for Accessing EdShare From Your Office:
Windows XP | Mac OS X

Instructions for Accessing EdShare from Off Campus:

  2. Test your new web site
Open a web browser and go to your web address:
    http://myweb.stedwards.edu/loginname

If you get an error "Forbidden. You don't have permission to access /loginname/", check the files in Edshare\public_html to make sure there is a file named index.htm or index.html. Filenames must be lowercase.
  3. Request a redirect, if needed. If you want your current web address automatically redirected to your new web address, contact the Computer Help Desk. Give the Help Desk your current web address and your loginname. Please allow at least 1 working day for the redirect to be created.
  4. Change your web address displayed on the Directory and Course Catalog.
Log into EdWeb for Faculty and select Update URL. Type in your new web address http://myweb.stedwards.edu/loginname and click on submit.
  5. Update any printed documents and notify anyone you know who is linking to your old web address.
