1.  The Mac cannot access email and the browser says that it cannot make a network socket connection. What do I do?

Check the Apple Chooser ( It's under the Apple on the left side of the Menu bar.) If you cannot see Apple Servers or Printers, the network connection has been broken and AppleTalk and TCP/IP will not work. Check the network cable on the back of the Mac. If it is connected, try reseating it. If this does not clear the problem, the cable itself may be bad or the network connection at the wall may not be working. If there is another Mac nearby which does have a working network connection, try using its cable connection on the disabled Mac or try using the cable connection from the disable Mac on the working one. If this does not isolate the problem, either the Mac network hardware or the Mac network software is bad. Put a nice, "This computer is down for service" on the Mac and report the problem to ulist.labtalk along with your conclusions. If this last step works, report your trouble shooting conclusions to ulist.labtalk and put a nice down sign on the Mac.

If AppleTalk is working, as verified in the steps above, unlock FoolProof, and with the mouse select Control Panels, TCP/IP. This control panel should have the following settings, Connect via: "Ethernet", Setup, Configure: Using "DHCP Server", and an IP Address which starts with 10. If the IP address starts with 169. , you will need to report the hardware address for this Mac to the helpline with a request that it be released by the DHCP Server. Make certain that the TCP/IP control panel is active, and with the mouse select File, Get info. This will bring up a box with the title, TCP/IP Info. In the Addresses: section you will see a line with the title Hardware address:. Write down the 12 digit code, i.e. 00 0A 27 AD ED C8. Send this hardware address along with a statement that this Mac's IP address starts with 169 and request that the address be released from the DHCP Server to the helpline and ulist.labtalk.  Put a nice sign on the Mac which says that the email and network browsing features are not available.

2.  When double clicking on a program such as Netscape or Microsoft Word, nothing seems to open.

This usually only happens to PC users who aren't accustomed to the Macintosh operating system.  9 times out of 10 the program was already open when the user clicked on the icon.  Simply double click the icon and look at the menu bar on the top of the screen.  In Netscape, simply click on File and New to open a new window for browsing.  Word and most other programs are very similar.

3. A floppy disk won't show up on the desktop.

This is usually a driver problem.  Turn off Foolproof and check in the temp folder for the floppy usb driver package.  Run the installer and turn Foolproof back on.  Unplug the usb cord to the floppy and then plug it back in.  This should result in the floppy showing up on the desktop.
