1. Why can't I print my document to the printer from a PC?

First, in order to print from a pc in any of the computer labs on campus, the pc has to be logged in to the network. You can verify that a pc is logged in to the network by double-clicking on the "my computer" icon on the desktop, and checking to see if there is an icon for the shared network drive called "temp" on PC\Lab1. If there is not at least one network drive icon visible in "my computer", then the pc is NOT logged in and will NOT print. To log the pc in to the network, click start/programs/novell. When the Novell client window comes up, verify that the username matches the machine name of the pc, which is located on the label on the top of each monitor. There is no password. Click "ok" on the Novell client, and the machine should then display a brief login script, and login to the network. Try to print the document again. On our Novell network, a successful print job will result in a white banner displayed with the name of the document that just printed.

The machine is logged in to the network, but still won't print...try the simple things first. Check the printer itself - are there any error messages on the printer display? Is there a paper jam that needs to be cleared? Try turning off the printer for 30 seconds, then turning the power back on.

Double click the printer icon in the printer folder in "my computer" and look to see if any print jobs are spooled. Try purging one or all of the spooled print jobs, and attempt to print the document again.

If the document still won't print, the next step would be to uninstall and reinstall the printer driver on the pc that won't print. Login to the network with your labop id. Turn off Foolproof, double click "my computer" and open the printer folder. Right click and delete the printer icon. Double click the "add printer" icon, and walk through the add printer wizard to reinstall a fresh printer driver. You can select a printer driver from the list of printers provided by Windows if the correct printer is listed, or you can browse to the correct printer driver on the network and install it from there. All printer drivers for HP printers in St. Edward's computer labs are stored in the "drivers" directory on Lab1\apps, which is available to any lab assistant logged in as labop. Knowledge of printers and printer troubleshooting are an extremely important part of working as a lab assistant at St. Edward's University. If you are unsure of any part of this procedure, please see Dave, Garrod, or George and we'll be glad to help.

2.  How do I find out which printer a Mac is printing to?

Any Mac Application that prints will display a Print Control box after one makes the selection with the mouse, File, Print. Our naming convention in Student Computing is to use the building code, followed by the room number, followed by the type of printer. Thus RD212_HPV would be the choice for the printer in the Ragsdale 212 room which at the time that this answer was written was a Hewlett Packard V.

3.  How do I select a printer for a Mac?

Use the mouse to move to the Apple on the left side of the menu bar. Select the Chooser. You may see a number of different printer icons. Best choice is the LaserWriter 8. Once selected, you will see every networked PostScript printers on campus. Select one which starts with the building code and room number where you want to print.

4.  A student just finished a test on Evergreen and it won't print.

Make sure the student has selected the print option, then exit out of the program.  This will send the print job to the printer.

5. What do I do when a toner needs to be replaced?

First, check the model of the printer and find an appropriate replacement cartridge.  Put the old cartridge in the new box and then print out a sheet telling us how many pages the toner cartridge printed.  This can be done in the following way:

*HP5 - press the menu button on the left side once, press the item button on the right side three times, press the select button

*HP4000 and 8100 - press the menu button on the right side once, press the item button on the right side twice, press the select button

*HP2100 - press the on line button and job cancel button at the same time.
