Campus safety is a primary concern for the entire St. Edward's University community. Maintaining an environment that upholds the university's values of personal respect and dignity to all is essential to living our mission.
Our police professionals form a full-service law enforcement agency that serves safety needs and concerns of the university 24 hours a day, seven days a week. All officers are licensed by the State of Texas and vested with full law enforcement powers and responsibilities.
We maintain a "community policing" approach to campus safety, with ongoing education and dialog. Officers play a daily, active role within the campus community:
- Conduct routine patrols to deter crime
- Lead bike safety, personal self-defense and crime prevention classes
- Create awareness of fire and safety hazards
- Work collaboratively with the campus community and student government to provide a safe and secure campus
We also emphasize prevention, working closely with campus maintenance and landscaping staff to maintain university buildings and grounds with an eye to safety and security.
Residence Hall Safety
Officers work closely with resident directors and resident assistants to enforce restricted key card access and maintain safety procedures.
All exterior doors to campus housing are locked 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to protect the safety and privacy of residents. Only students who reside in a particular building will have access to it.
Annual Security Report and Annual Fire Safety Report
Clery Act is a federal statute that requires all colleges and universities that participate in federal financial aid programs to maintain and report on campus safety. Each year, the University Police Department publishes a Campus Crime Statistics report that is available to parents and students online. In addition, university police maintain a daily log of all crimes reported. That log and the annual report may be reviewed at the University Police Office during normal working hours.
It is the policy of St. Edward's University to comply with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which prohibits sex- and gender-based discrimination (including sexual harassment and sexual violence) in the university's educational programs and activities. Title IX also prohibits retaliation for asserting claims of sex and gender discrimination.
