To what extent did September 11, 2001, change thinking and attitudes, and what are the prospects for the future? Free. |

Movie: God Grew Tired of Us - Presented by University Programs Movie: God Grew Tired of Us - Presented by University Programs
Orphaned by a tumultuous civil war and traveling barefoot across the sub-Saharan desert, John Bul Dau, Daniel Abol Pach and Panther Blor were among the 25,000 "Lost Boys" (ages 3 to 13) who fled villages, formed surrogate families and sought refuge from famine, disease, wild animals and attacks from rebel soldiers. Named by a journalist after Peter Pan's posse of orphans who protected and provided for each other, the "Lost Boys" traveled together for five years and against all odds crossed into the UN's refugee camp in Kakuma, Kenya. University Programs Presents John Bul Dau
Recreation and Convocation Center (RCC)
John Bul Dau is one of the featured men in Christopher Quinn's documentary, God Grew Tired of Us, and he has experienced journeys in life that most people never imagine. Born in war-torn Sudan, Dau is one of 27,000 Lost Boys forced to flee their villages when the northern government began attacking the south. Dau discusses taking responsibility and leading others to do positive things. He talks about how at age 13 he was thrown into leading 200 smaller boys across Sudan, and how it made him a stronger person. The speech shows audiences that when you start small - changing yourself, your family, and your home - you will grow as a leader and will be able to achieve greater change. Dau discusses taking responsibility and leading others to do positive things. Free. |

Storytelling Apes presented by Professor Mary Pollock, Department of English, Stetson University
Maloney Room, Main Building
Storytelling Apes is an example of eco-criticism, an emerging branch of literary criticism which foregrounds issues of nature and the environment in the same way feminist criticism foregrounds issues of sex and gender. Professor Pollock takes this approach a step farther by applying the tools of literary criticism to the study of field narratives by primatologists. In showing how primatologists meet the challenge of creating monkey "characters" in books intended for both general and scientific audiences, she will discuss in some detail Karen Strier's book about Brazilian muriqui monkeys, Faces in the Forest, and Robert Sapolski's memoir of life among the baboons, A Primate's Memoir. |
