Invisible Children Presents: The Rescue Film and Discussion about Africa's Longest Running War
Meadow's Coffeehouse

Representatives from the Invisible Children Organization headquarters in San Diego will be on campus Tuesday, Nov. 10 to show the latest film, "The Rescue," along with an update about the situation of child soldiers and Africa's longest running war. Earlier this week, the Ugandan-native LRA attacked a displacement camp in Darfur, killing five. The attack raised fears that the LRA, infamous for abducting children and brutally maiming its victims, is moving towards troubled Darfur. Choose action over apathy. Come and join the discussion.

Dr. Karen E. Nelson, Director of Human Microbiology and Metagenomics at the J. Craig Venter Institute (JCVI), will be the keynote speaker at the 2009 W. M. Keck Symposium.  Dr. Nelson has extensive experience in microbial ecology, genomics and metagenomics.   While at JCVI, Dr. Nelson has led several genomic and metagenomic efforts and most recently has been involved in metagenomic studies of the human biome and metagenomic approaches to study the ecology of rumen and corals.

Visiting Writers Series Features Cyrus Cassells

Cyrus Cassells will read from his forthcoming book, The Crossed-Out Swastika, which is scheduled for publication in 2010.The Crossed-Out Swastika tells the stories of young people who lived through World War II in Europe.Cassells is a professor of English at Texas State University in San Marcos and has served on the faculty of Cave Canem, the African American Poets Workshop. Among his honors are a Lannan Literary Award, a William Carlos Williams Award, a Pushcart Prize, two NEA grants, and a Lambda Literary Award. The event is free and open to the public and a light reception will follow.

Sorin Reel Film Festival aims to promote and celebrate the creativity and talents at St. Edward's University. Once a semester, the best student films in the university community are screened at the festival. Submit your films of any genre to Jon Wayne or Sarah by Nov. 6. The films should not exceed 15 minutes in length and can be of any genre, subject matter and thematic content. There is no limit to the number of films that can be submitted. Films selected to be screened at the festival will be judged on: Production Value, Creativity, Content and Effort.

Warren Senders is an internationally-recognized musician and educator with decades of involvement in the artistic and pedagogical traditions of India as well as those of Western, African and African-American musics. Senders will be accompanied in his concert in Austin by Gourisankar Karmakar on the tabla and Sameer Kotasthane on the harmonium.  To sign up for the 24-hour Fast for Hunger, stop by the Ragsdale Center Lobby from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Nov. 17.
 
Individuals participating in the fast are encouraged to donate the money they would have spent on meals for that day to LifeWorks.

Woodsburner: A Reading by John Pipkin

Back by popular demand, the author of bestseller Woodsburner returns to read from his book and provide advice to aspiring writers. John Pipkin is the former Executive Director of the Writers’ League of Texas, a non-profit and literary arts organization.
Woodsburner recounts the fire set to 300 acres of woods by the naturalist Henry David Thoreau. The book describes the effects of this fire on four main characters. Combining fiction with history, Woodsburner chronicles these changed lives with one final compelling character, the fire itself.

The Bicentennial Commemorations in Mexico and Latin America with Dr. Roberto Breña

In 2010, the Hispanic World will commemorate not only Mexico's bicentennial but several others in Latin America. Dr. Roberto Breña is Professor of History of Ideas at the Center for International Studies at El Colegio de México in Mexico City.  He is a specialist on the first quarter of the nineteenth-century in Spain and Latin America. Dr. Breña will discuss the "revoluciones Hispanicas" as part of a much larger historical process which involved not only Mexico, but many countries in Latin America and Spain as well. Dr. Breña is currently teaching at UT on the Latin American independence movements.

New volumes about Galileo continue to appear regularly. The popular fascination is in part fueled by the perception that science and religion, faith and reason are in conflict. This presentation will give an overview of Galileo's scientific contributions, the state of the Church at the time, and the essential aspects of the conflict between Galileo and the Church.
