St. Edward's University CAMP Program
Receives 2006 Texas Aguila Award

CAMP studentsSt. Edward’s University is proud to announce that its College Assistance Migrant Program received the 2006 Texas Aguila Award in Education, an award given to those who provide confidence and encouragement to the Hispanic community through their contributions and earn the respect and admiration of their colleagues.

In 1972, St. Edward's University responded to the higher educational needs of migrant students by developing and hosting one of the nation's first College Assistance Migrant Programs (CAMP).

Established as a freshman level scholarship program, CAMP is designed to offer an educational opportunity to the sons and daughters of migrant and seasonal farmworkers. Funded by the U.S. Department of Education and St. Edward's University, CAMP has provided an education to more than 2,100 students since 1972. Each year, 35 students are chosen to participate in the program.

“The CAMP program is an example of St. Edward's commitment to providing educational opportunities to students of varied culture and economic backgrounds,” said CAMP Director Esther Q. Yacono. “We are extremely proud of the opportunity provided by our CAMP program and we are honored that members of our community have chosen us for this award.”

For two weeks, the Aguila Awards Foundation (AAF) conducted an online voting campaign that allowed the community to vote for a winner. The award recipients were honored Wednesday, April 26 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Austin. Shayla Rivera, host of Lifetime Television’s new reality series, “You’re not the man I married,” hosted the annual gala.
The other Texas Aguila Award categories are: Television/Film; Music; Community; Sports; Entertainment and Business.

“The Aguila Awards Foundation recognizes the expanding Hispanic population within the state of Texas. As a growing community, it is essential to empower the Hispanic community with a voice in honoring its positive influencers and contributors,” said Gloria Tostado, Manager of Community Relations, General Motors and Texas Aguila Awards Gala advisory member.
